Over the past decade, the traditional Quebec group Genticorum (Pascal Gemme, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand and Yann Falquet) has become a fixture on the international world, folk and Celtic music circuit. Firmly rooted in the musical soil of their home, this energetic and original ‘power trio’ also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures into their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute, gorgeous harmonies, energetic foot percussion, guitar and bass accompaniment into a big and jubilant sound. Onstage, their sense of humour and stage presence makes them a supreme crowd-pleaser.

Two families and two generations of players come together in this vivacious “dandelion” salad of music, freshly harvested from the gardens of five creative musicians from Lanaudière. While traditional in nature, Dentdelionplays tunes full of bright ideas, often composing new versions of old songs or inventing original music to go with traditional lyrics. Dentdelion is Claude Méthé (Quebec: violin, guitar, vocals),Dana Whittle (New England: guitar, vocals, foot percussion, accordion, harmonica), Denise Levac (Quebec: lute, vocals), Colin Savoie-Levac (Denise’s son: banjo, mandolin, guitar, foot percussion, vocals) and Béatrix Méthé (Claude and Dana’s daughter: violin, vocals).

Lanaudière is known round the world as Québec‘s most musical region. There, traditional music is all around and passed down through generations – as it has for Les Poules à Colin, four young gals and a guy named Colin whose group name comes from a traditional song (in English, “Colin’s Hens”). They perform a sparkling, diversified bilingual repertoire of intimate waltzes, reels and beautifully sung call-and-response songs. The group is Éléonore Pitre (guitar, vocals), Sarah Marchand (vocals, piano, guitar, bodhrán), Colin Savoie-Levac (strings, foot percussion, vocals), Béatrix Méthé (violin, vocals), and Marie Savoie-Levac (piano, bass, vocals).

Le Bal à l’huile are remarkable singers who are faithful to the vocal and musical styling’s and traditions of Québec, yet bring their own harmonic twist to that repertoire. Their name is a harkening back to the days of big kitchen parties, when musicians and vocalists gathered together to play and sing at oil lamp parties or “a ball of oil”. Singing both a cappella and accompanied by acoustic instruments are Patrick Goulet (vocals), Jean Coupal and Isaël McIntyre (vocals, foot percussion), Normand Breton (accordions), Olivier Brousseau and Paulyn Lacroix (guitar, vocals) and Guy Breton (bass, vocals).

Meet New York’s Matuto (“bumpkin” in Brazilian slang), a 6 member group forging an irresistible sonic dialogue between Brazil and America. “Whether you’re talking Zydeco or forró, these musical worlds have so much in common,” says Clay Ross, Matuto guitarist and band co-founder with accordionist Rob Curto. “They are grooving and sexy and all about dancing with your partner.” Come experience Matuto’s inspired worldly sound as it sashays onto the Festival stage!

“Vashaan” is a Baluchi word meaning joy and hope, and the Vashaan Ensemble draws upon Iran’s rich musical past to perform joyful and memorable Persian traditional songs, and to celebrate the lively and distinctive folk music of Sistan, Baluchistan and the Southern Khorasan provinces of Iran. The group is comprised of some of the finest classically-trained Persian musicians working outside of Iran today. The group features Fathieh Honari (vocals), Reza Honari (Persian kamanche – a bowed, stringed instrument), Ali Sajjadi (setar, radif, barbat, oud – stringed instruments), Saina Khaledi (santour – a type of hammered dulcimer) and Hamin (tombak – a goblet-shaped Persian drum).
