JouTou (“play everything”) is a super-group of world music virtuosos who, through sheer talent and an open-hearted approach to cross-cultural music-making, take the terms “collaboration” to new, increasingly sophisticated and very musically appealing places. At Festival du Bois, in a brand new project, JouTou’s Québec-born multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Andre Thibault, Chinese pipa genius Qiu Xia He, Amy Stephen (accordion, vocals) and Liam MacDonald (Brazilian & Middle Eastern frame drum, percussion) have invited djembe and balafon maestro Fana Soro to join them in a ground-breaking collaboration with recently-arrived master Peruvian percussionist, Oscar Villenueva Martínez’s. Throughout Oscar Villanueva Martínez’s musical career, which has spanned over 30 years, he has celebrated the stories, songs and dances of his Afro-Peruvian ancestral traditions. He has also delved into a fusion of Afro Peruvian and contemporary dances and percussion. His artistic work embodies and reflects both his rich musical heritage and his passion for exploring cultural fusions. Add in some Middle Eastern dance, and we’ll be treated to a thrilling, pioneering music mix that spans five continents.
